Ever since its formation in 1972, the society for the Care of the Blind, Sector: 26, Chandigarh (Regd.) has been actively engaged in the Education, Training & Rehabilitation of Blind children and also working for the prevention of Blindness.
The Institute for the Blind being run under the aegis of the Society, functions as a Recognised Senior Secondary School affiliated to Punjab School Education Board, Mohali and imparts training in creative crafts including:-
- Basic Computer Literacy Training
- Orientation & Mobility Training
Caning of Chairs
- Wax Candle Making
- Handloom Weaving
- Typewriting (English & Hindi)
Stenography in Braille script
- Music (Vocal & Instrumental)
OBJECTIVES
1. To impart educational and vocational training to the blind children.
2. To help in the rehabilitation of children passing out of the Institute.
3. To create awareness amongst the general public, particularly the rural areas in and around Chandigarh, on the causes of blindness and promote its prevention.
Education
It is a Senior Secondary School, permanently recognized by Education Department, Chandigarh Administration. The instruction is mainly imparted through Braille Script. Middle Standard examination is conducted by Education Department, Chandigarh Administration. Matric and Senior Secondary examinations are conducted by Punjab School Education Board, Mohali. The Institute has been maintaining excellent academic records.
Students
At present the Institute has a strength of 97 boys and 53 girl students. Of these 60 are day scholars.
Hostel facility is available for 70 boys and 60 girls. They have separate hostels with suitable facilities of toilets, solar water heating arrangements, TV and indoor games etc.
APPEAL
Institute for the Blind is though partially government aided, yet most of the expenses are met out of the donations received from generous donors. A part of the staff of the Institute receives major part of their salaries from the govt. Balance of their salaries is paid by the society out of its own sources. To run the administration efficiently the Institute is required to engage additional staff, Govt. Scholarships received @ Rs. 100/- per child from class 1st to class 8th and Rs. 250/- per child from classes 9th to 12th are credited to their personal Saving Bank Accounts opened by the Institute in two public sector banks. In addition any amount earned by them in the vocational training crafts is also credited to their accounts. This accumulated amount helps them in settling in life after they pass out from the Institute. All the students are provided free transport, meals, uniforms, other dresses and toiletries etc. Students are not required to spend on anything. To meet all this expenditure as also to effect improvements in the Institute an appeal is made for generous donations by the donors.
