4) What questions should we be asking potential providers?

General Meeting: Developing Workflow Solutions in SharePoint 2007

With SharePoint workflow, which uses Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) as a workflow engine, there are other options available to developers in addition to custom Visual Studio 2005 solutions. In Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, there are some out-of-the-box workflows (for example, document approval) that can easily be associated with a SharePoint list item. For more complex scenarios, you can write rules-based workflow logic with Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007. In any case, out-of-the-box reporting capabilities allow tracking of task duration and cancelations/errors. For this demo, we will review the full range of SharePoint workflow functionality, focusing on the Litware Visual Studio 2005 workflow solution.

General Meeting: Skinning The Media Field Control and using on Publishing Page Layouts

Although there are several enhancements that allow for sharing rich media on SharePoint 2010, I will focus on the Media Field Control, which is also used on the Media WebPart that allows for sharing media in an ad hoc manner.
The Business Scenario – Creating a custom Publishing Page Layout and using the Media Field Control
So, if we have the Media WebPart, why use the Media Field Control?  Great question!  Here is one scenario, let’s say you are looking to create a Publishing Page Layout for a Press Release on your SharePoint Site.  This Publishing Page Layout needs to support the ability for users to insert a video and enrich user experience.
This session will not go into details on creating a Publishing Page Layout
Media Field Control - Out of the Box Capabilities
• It plays videos from within SharePoint or remote locations
• It is built on Silverlight 3.0 or higher
• You can skin it to change the appearance using Expression Blend 3, since the skin is a XAML file
It is extensible via the JavaScript Object Model, you can play, pause, change properties, etc.

General Meeting: SharePoint in the Cloud

Many companies rely upon Return on Investment (ROI) when making technology strategy decisions, but few take the time to actually determine how much that strategy will cost over time. That's unfortunate, because without estimating the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), ROI is meaningless. There's no way of knowing how large an investment is actually being made.

That's particularly true when companies decide whether to use an IT hosting provider or take the do-it-yourself route; Buy v. Build.  Because managed hosting is presenting a complete solution, all costs are on the table from the start. By contrast, in-house hosting often involves hidden costs that aren't surfaced until the do-it-yourself project is well underway.

Hidden cost when trying to ‘build’ an infrastructure will be buried in three phases; Capital Expenditures (CAPEX), Hardware Deprecation and overall infrastructure maintenance.

With the introduction of Public Cloud and Private Cloud infrastructures, it truly allows for a more SaaS based SharePoint deployment with better utilization of resources and Global deployments.

General Meeting: Enabling Social Media through Metadata

Many companies, whether considering further investment in their SharePoint 2007 deployments or planning upgrades to SharePoint 2010, are reviewing their social media strategies. The intent of this presentation is to walk participants through the taxonomy and governance implications of the social media capabilities within SharePoint 2007 and 2010, to provide them with the information they need to prepare their organization for these tools, and to provide guidance, best practices, and working examples on how to approach setting up and managing metadata, aligning these tools with their broader corporate content management strategies, and to maintain manageability of their SharePoint environment through governance.
