See what’s new in SharePoint 2010 and workflow. In this session, you will receive an overview of the new design tools for workflow in SharePoint 2010. Also learn how to encompass all aspects of MOSS including sites, lists, document libraries, reports, InfoPath and Workflow to automate business applications. See an example of how a IT change request following Microsoft’s Operations Frameworks uses many artifacts within MOSS to bring together a cohesive application. Areas of focus will be workspaces and security, document search, as well as InfoPath Form Services. Providing social computing is possibly the hardest decision a business leader can make. How do you open creativity and innovation? How does social computing build company morale? What are the advantages? What are the pitfalls to watch for? How do you control the access and content? Are there government guidelines for this activity? How do protect the company? Lastly, how does SharePoint 2010 help? This session discusses if and/or how social computing can help and/or detract from the business. ... Read More"Governance relates to decisions that define expectations, grant power, or verify performance." Quite often, when people think of SharePoint Governance, they only think of a document that outlines CAN’Ts for the system: what you can’t store, where you can’t go, what you can’t do. This session will show that true governance should help users at all levels utilize SharePoint to its fullest extent. It details the roles of individuals and groups who manage the system and work within the system; it explains how the system is laid out and what type of work should be done in each of its areas; it does lay out policies and restrictions, but it also documents the processes end users can follow to get things done and truly make use of everything their SharePoint system has to offer. We’ll also review how to create groups to develop and maintain SharePoint governance. These groups are executive level leaders, and end users with business and SharePoint knowledge. They help shape the services offered, and without them, your SharePoint implementation is one step closer to failure. After we've got our cheat-sheet to help us out, and think that some of those buzz words are actually business worthy, where do we go? We know that we can't continue running "business as usual" when times are changing by the second as is the nature of business with our partners, competitors and fellow public sector agencies. One of the new enterprise platform solutions from Microsoft to help address these concerns is SharePoint 2010.
However, before jumping in, do you know what you need to support the project from your agencies end? As great as SharePoint can be, it is not a complete solution just out-of-the-box (no matter how many ways you try to convince yourself). You don't need to have the ENTIRE project mapped out up front, but don't be fooled, you will need to bring some knowledge, decisions and ideas to the table to get (and keep) things moving.

... Read MoreGovernment agencies are relying now more than ever on document management and collaboration tools like Microsoft SharePoint 2010 to effectively managed the staggering amount of data they generate and to help remote teams and people work together. As a result, ensuring the resiliency and availability of this mission-critical application as part of Continuity of Operations Planning (COOP) is of paramount importance.
One of the biggest challenges faced when performing disaster recovery operations on Microsoft SharePoint Server data and content is that the data is distributed across many disparate locations and consists of several separate components. The native backup and restore tools with SharePoint do not protect the entire SharePoint infrastructure.
While Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 has added new features focused on backup and recovery, ensuring continuous availability of SharePoint requires a holistic approach across not just SharePoint but also SQL Server databases, file system content and other systems such as Microsoft Exchange. This session will provide a brief overview of the SharePoint Server 2010 architecture, focusing on the recovery and availability features of the product, as well as showing how an agency can ensure continuity of operations by using a combination of SharePoint functionality and 3rd party solutions such as Neverfail for protection against hardware, network, operating system and application failures. ... Read MoreAll Federal agencies employ business processes where users submit a request that goes through one or more levels of approval. In most cases, requests are sent back to the requestor to address issues and to resubmit. This is a typical state machine workflow which cannot be implemented using SharePoint Designer as declarative workflows do not support returning to a previous step in the process. Additionally once an approved approves or rejects a workflow task, that workflow is deemed complete. Restarting a workflow after the requester has made a change to the request has traditionally required developing custom code using Visual Studio. In Government environments this presents a challenge as it requires IT involvement and additional security reviews and restrictions (such as certification and accreditation) associated with custom code deployment. In this session, I explore how declarative workflows can be used to simulate this commonly occurring state machine process. The simulation is using SharePoint 2010, but can also easily be adopted for SharePoint 2007.
