Development: SharePoint 2010 Developer Goodness

Although few argue the business success of SharePoint you’ll find far fewer developers singing the praises of SharePoint. For developers the lack-luster integration with Visual Studio was often a pain point. For developers and designers alike SharePoint Designer, with all of its portability and applications lifecycle consequences were also a source of frustration. For all the heavy development environment requirements could often be a show stopper. With all that and more in mind SharePoint 2010 represents a significant step forward fore SharePoint as a development platform. SharePoint is now a first class citizen in Visual Studio 2010. SharePoint Designer can now fully participate in application development lifecycle. Windows Vista and Windows 7 are now viable development platforms for SharePoint. In this session we will be introducing the new features of Visual Studio 2010’s integration with SharePoint. We will be providing on overview of SharePoint Designer 2010 new ability to produce WSP packages. Development: jPoint: A jQuery Based Library for creating Web 2.0 Apps in SharePoint

Have you ever wanted to hide certain fields in a SharePoint list form that were “For Office Use Only?” Or to create a chat/IM tool or AJAX enable a list, but did not have rights to deploy a custom solution on the server? Or to use drag and drop functionality on a SharePoint page? Many developers have turned to jQuery client-side scripts to solve these issues. Many solutions take to much time to get off the ground and they break when used in other browsers. And what about your current client-side scripts when you upgrade to SharePoint 2010? Will they work? These problems are being solved by the FREE open source community project called jPoint. It is hosted on codeplex at http://jPoint.codeplex.com. jPoint is a data access layer for SharePoint to make it easier for developers to work with form fields and communicate with the SharePoint web services. It also provides a deployment framework so developers can create jPart “plugins” that site Administrators can drop on their pages to create Web 2.0 mashups. This presentation will comprise of three segments:

1: Demo of a real life Web 2.0 App in SharePoint
2: Explanation of jParts and how Site Admins can configure them
3: Deep dive into jPoint library and API (time permitting)

Special Interest: Project Transparency powered by SharePoint

The term ‘Transparency’ is being thrown around a lot these days largely in part to a push by the federal government to require more visibility into the way taxpayer monies are being spent. This concept has been around for awhile and cuts across the political spectrum. The ‘Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act of 2006’ was passed under the Bush administration and there is a strong provision for transparency reporting outlined in the 'American Recovery and Reinvestment Act' (ARRA) of 2009 passed under the Obama administration. Since a significant portion of many organizational budgets are spent on project related initiatives, even incremental improvements in large project/portfolio performance and fiscal disciple can mean millions in annual savings for these entities. For public organizations this means better usage of taxpayer dollars; for private companies, it means more value creation for shareholders. The concept of transparency is simple: provide relevant and timely information to key decision makers and stakeholders. This affords the decision makers the opportunity to take corrective action on wayward initiatives sooner (i.e. before it's too late) and provides stakeholders the information necessary to hold them accountable if they do not. Though the concept is simple, solutions are often not. Differences in the way organizations manage information, people, and technology means that the problem is multi-faceted and requires an organizational (sometimes a multi-organizational) approach. In this case study based presentation, participants will learn:

* What Project Transparency is about and why it is important
* The challenges with developing solutions
* How SharePoint can be leveraged as the base platform for Project Transparency

The presentation will be followed by attendee Q&A

Development: Simple Branching Logic with List Forms in a Code Free Environment

If you have worked on a SharePoint installation for the federal government you are probably familiar with the restrictions the work entails. Anything that requires installing code is often extremely hard or impossible to implement because of buerocratic hurdles. For the power end user, customizations are rough. Even simple modifications in SharePoint Designer are out of reach for many. One of the most common requests I get is, “Can I add branching logic to item entry screens?” Let’s face it; the new item form is inflexible. Each user sees the same fields regardless of their needs and lists designed to house a robust selection of data end up being massively long. In the past there was nothing I could do. Now I know a better way. As an example, let’s say I want to create a list to track items that modify a group’s budget. A number of drop down fields will be given to define the budget modification desired. Some choices will result in more drop down selections being needed. Some will result in comment boxes being required to describe the decisions. We could include every possible field with instructions to skip the ones not needed, but the entry form will be long and scary to less computer savvy users. In my presentation I will show how to add a content query web part to the form with some simple Javascript included. With no installation, not a great deal of technical know-how required, and in even the strictest of environments, I will clean up my budget modification form to make it short and user friendly with some added branching logic. This presentation is a must for any power users looking to get a little more out of their SharePoint site.
