... Read MoreThe best thing about SharePoint is that you can put any content into it. The worst thing about SharePoint is that you can put any content into it. For most organizations, Microsoft SharePoint compliance is crucial. While organizations that use SharePoint are taking advantage of the Internet in a powerful way, they are potentially putting themselves at risk through uncontrolled content creation and posting by participating employees. Additionally, as organizations develop and implement their Web 2.0/Gov 2.0 strategies, it creates additional challenges for balancing access to public vs. private information. You probably have more hidden risk than you realize and it's growing exponentially every day as more employees use SharePoint. Whether malicious or not, confidential information, personally identifiable information (PII) like credit cards and social security numbers, obscene or offensive language, secure sensitive information (SSI), or other material that violates regulatory or organizational standards can find its way into the hands of everyone on the system ‒ unless an automated governance solution is in place. In this session Dana Simberkoff will review the challenges associated with content governance in SharePoint and demonstrate how an automated and integrated compliance management solution can easily translate your organization’s guidelines into a repeatable and enforceable process. Learn: • About the accessibility (Section 508), privacy, and operational security vulnerabilities and risks your organization might be exposed to due to the collaborative nature of SharePoint. • How to easily manage SharePoint content compliance to address Web Accessibility and other Web Governance issues including privacy, personally identifiable information (PII), profanity and operational security (OpSec) mandates. • How to automate and enforce federal and agency guidelines and standards within websites, intranets, document libraries, email, and social and collaborative media to stay ahead of compliance challenges before they become an issue. However, building out the connectivity required behind the scenes to leverage all these capabilities remains difficult, time consuming, and requires heavy coding. Come see how Enterprise Enabler® is being used by government and business to implement BDC in days or even hours by eliminating adapters, coding and ongoing maintenance. This enterprise scale integration software platform resides inside of SharePoint on the same server, leveraging SSS security and enabling transaction rollbacks when connecting to external systems. In this session you’ll see a multi-application integration with SharePoint 2010 built live with full CRUD capability. We will demonstrate how to use AppComms to auto discover endpoint data sources and their schema without adapters or custom coding. Learn how to build virtual relationships across disparate data sources by simply dragging and dropping, even more easily than building relationships across tables in a relational database! When you are done configuring, you’ll experience push button creation of the BDC. Within minutes your user is working live on the external data from a SharePoint list. Finally, you’ll see the security and rollback features live and begin thinking about how this could be applied in your environment. Users can interact with data from hard to expose applications, databases and control devices. You will see how you can quickly improve key performance indicators and create collaboration across departments and areas of expertise, without having to expose employees to new systems. At the end of the session you’ll get a free developers kit to allow you to use what you learned. Within days you’ll be connecting everything and everyone in your organization. ... Read MoreSharePoint is an outstanding tool for collaboration amongst personnel residing within the same enterprise. But competing successfully today requires collaborating with third-parties outside of a company’s virtual four walls. Organizations must interact with speed and flexibility, yet ironclad security must be maintained at all times – regardless of the number of constituents, their affiliations, or where they physically reside. Projects that traverse corporate or geographic boundaries require a secure SharePoint service that controls entry to the collaborative community, limits access to information to only those partners and users with valid permissions, and protects intellectual property whether at rest or in transit. To achieve these objectives, such a service must incorporate three vital concepts: trust, compliance, and information governance. • Trust: A key factor in establishing trust with partners is mitigating the risk associated with external identity management. How is administration of identities handled amongst partners, and how do partners fulfill their assigned responsibilities? In other words, trust but verify. How do you support these capabilities, and audit to certify that the user access process executes without compromise? • Compliance: Compliance with privacy laws and regulatory mandates such as Sarbanes-Oxley and EU Data Protection requirements is a must for any system that is managing data from multiple companies or countries. Does the service ensure enforcement? Does it go the extra step and support information release based not only on compliance-driven access rules, but also on project-specific explicit approvals for information sharing? • Information Governance: Because project data may span a spectrum of sensitivity-levels, categorizing information properly in order to apply the appropriate amount of protection is essential. Does the solution promote the creation and governance of knowledge management rules that capture what can be shared, when to use various forms of collaboration, and how to segregate information so each party’s intellectual property is protected from unauthorized access? In this presentation, we will describe each of these concepts in greater depth, explain why they are absolutely necessary for B2B project environments, and offer practical tips on how to embed them within a secure SharePoint service that promotes productive partner collaboration. That's unfortunate, because without estimating the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), ROI is meaningless. There's no way of knowing how large an investment is actually being made.
That's particularly true when companies decide whether to use an IT hosting provider or take the do-it-yourself route; Buy v. Build. Because managed hosting is presenting a complete solution, all costs are on the table from the start. By contrast, in-house hosting often involves hidden costs that aren't surfaced until the do-it-yourself project is well underway.
Hidden cost when trying to ‘build’ an infrastructure will be buried in three phases; Capital Expenditures (CAPEX), Hardware Deprecation and overall infrastructure maintenance.

Unlike any technology before, SharePoint can empower individuals and groups to be involved in the development of these solutions. This is incredibly empowering, but also creates challenges.
End users, power users, and executives are often untrained in analyzing the process to be changed or automated and lack understanding of the underlying complexities of the technology. Conversely, IT professionals and developers often take a technology centric approach to providing tools, getting the ‘lights on’ and then leaving the users to figure it out themselves.
Effectively building solutions on SharePoint requires understanding of the problem space, organizational change management principles and solid project management discipline.
